What is Common Cold?

Common cold is a health condition that occurs due to viral infection. A variety of viruses are held responsible for this condition. While both adults and children can be infected, the common cold is thought to be one of the most common winter diseases. Infection by this virus may also be due to specific types of respiratory illnesses.   • Nasal Sprays: You may use a nasal spray to eliminate stuffy nose. Be careful about giving it to your children, however. Young kids below the age of 6 should not be treated with nasal decongestants.
  • Cough Syrup: This is the most common form of treating a consistent cough. While there is no concrete evidence of eliminating cough by cough syrups, it contains an antihistamine that helps fight allergies, thus providing relief.

Common cold has been around for centuries. As there is no specific treatment discovered yet, you may find relief by using certain home remedies for the common cold. Some of the often used remedies that work are:-

  • Liquids: It is advisable to remain hydrated when you are fighting a cold. Drink water throughout the day along with warm broth or hot lemon water. You may also try drinking ginger tea to feel energized. Drinking coffee or alcohol is a strict no-no.
  • Optimum Temperature: You will be feeling cold when common cold and fever plague you. Make sure to set the room temperature at optimum levels and clean the HVAC system’s filters to avoid being exposed to allergens.
  • Chicken Soup: Hot chicken soup with plenty of fresh vegetables is believed to be a popular medicine for the common cold. It is both a decongestant as well as provides adequate nutrition to your body. Spice it up for added benefits.
  • Rest: It is best to stay away from the office and school when you have a common cold. Not only will your body get proper rest by staying at home, but you benefit others who might have caught the infection from you.
  • Gargle: Using saline water to gargle every day is also one of the most excellent home remedies for a cold and cough.
